Wine Club Common Practices

  • Membership Fees:
    • Paid Membership: Some wine clubs charge a membership or initiation fee that can grant access to exclusive benefits like special releases, discounted prices, and members-only events. We’ve decided to have a free membership with a paid premium upgrade.
    • Free Membership: Many wine clubs, especially those run by wineries themselves, offer free membership where you only pay for the wine you order. This model is very common and can effectively attract a broader customer base. Having a hybrid is, what we feel to be, ideal for Grapes for Good.
  • Purchasing Options:
    • Autoship (Subscription Model): Many wine clubs operate on a subscription model where members receive a curated selection of wines either monthly, quarterly, or at another regular interval. This is a popular model because it builds a predictable revenue stream for the company and provides convenience for consumers.
    • On-Demand Purchases: Some clubs offer the flexibility to purchase whenever you choose rather than through a subscription. Members might receive notifications about new releases or special promotions and can buy at their discretion. We will have this option, though our Subscription Model will be the only option at sign up and single purchases will be done by “special offers” or “Re-up my order.”
  • Percentage on Autoship vs. On-Demand:
    • Autoship Subscribers: A large portion of wine club members opt for autoship because of the convenience and the curated experience. It’s common for clubs to see a significant majority of their revenue come from these recurring shipments.
    • On-Demand Buyers: While less common than autoship, there is a notable percentage of members who prefer purchasing on an ad-hoc basis. These members might be driven by specific releases or occasional purchases and typically do not contribute as regularly to the club’s revenue as subscription members.
  • Industry Trends:
    • Subscription-based memberships are becoming increasingly popular across all types of consumer goods, including wine, due to their convenience and the curated experience they offer.
    • Wine clubs that charge for membership often provide substantial value that can justify the fee, such as access to limited wines, free or discounted shipping, and additional perks like tasting events.

Based on this research and understanding, we have positioned Grapes for Good as a Free Membership with a “Premier Level” Upgrade, as well as host Product Package Autoship options as a central focus, with one-off purchases available by “special offer.” Extended memberships can include exclusive offers and access to Premier Plan wines only, exclusive tastings, Premier Badge, special access, etc.
